Starting an art business in Chester, MD: which licenses and registrations do I need?

Beneventi Botanicals is an exciting name to see on a new business in Chester. Fairs, galleries, and online shops let one piece reach collectors near and far, and commissions can follow a single admired work. Everything starts with the Maryland sales and use tax license, the registration suppliers and market organizers will ask to see. Here is what we will cover: how to structure Beneventi Botanicals, the tax IDs it needs, and the licenses that let you open in Chester, then a quick recap.

What Beneventi Botanicals needs

  1. Maryland sales and use tax license – You will be selling taxable goods, so register to collect sales tax before your first sale. It also lets you buy inventory for resale without paying tax on it.
  2. LLC (limited liability company) – An LLC shields your house, car, and savings from claims against the business, and it looks more established to customers and banks. A buyer could claim a piece arrived damaged and demand more than its value, and an LLC protects your home from that dispute.
  3. DBA (doing business as) registration – Most banks will not open an account or deposit checks made out to "Beneventi Botanicals" until the name is registered to you, either as a DBA or as the exact name of your LLC.
  4. EIN (federal tax ID number) – The federal tax ID number (EIN) identifies the business for taxes. You need it for an LLC, a business bank account, wholesale suppliers, and your first hire.
  5. Business license – A business license puts Beneventi Botanicals on the official map in Chester, which landlords, banks, and many customers will expect to see before they sign anything. Home occupation rules commonly cap client visits and delivery trucks on a residential street, so read them before you print business cards.

By the numbers: Banks, insurers, and tax forms will ask for your industry code. For an art business it is NAICS 453920 (Art Dealers), 459920 under the 2022 update. That makes 5 items on your list.

Tip: Photograph every piece with dimensions and materials before it sells; it simplifies listings, insurance, and any disputes.

To recap: Beneventi Botanicals in Chester, MD needs a sales tax permit, an LLC, a DBA, an EIN, and a business license. With the paperwork done, the fun part begins: serving your first customers.

We can file your seller's permit and the other registrations for you: start here.

Art
Art

As an artist, you are like a manufacturer.  You create art such as a painting and you sell  it for a profit.  That requires a sellers permit because a painting is a piece of merchandise and merchandise is taxable.

           Art
is a very difficult business to start up.

For example, some 59% of photographers give up their business in the first year. Of that remaining 42%, another 24% will fail within the 2nd year.

Actually, only about 18% will endure through the 3rd year. That means that more than 84% of photographer start ups give up before the 3rd year of operation. So do your research like you would do with any other business. Research the market and who your clients will be.  Then consider the licensing you need for your Art  business.

First, select your business structure: Sole Proprietor, Partnership, LLC or Corporation.

The above step is important business all documents will be filed under the type of business organizational structure. Anyhow, if you do not expect much business, just select sole proprietor as a start up photographer business.

After that, you will need to obtain a business permit because Art  is a business and all businesses need one..

This is a general business permit that all new businesses must obtain.

In addition, all Art  businesses must be identified by a business tax ID called a federal tax ID number or Employer Identification Number (EIN). If you file as a photography sole proprietor, you can use your social security number instead of the federal ID.

Then, a seller's permit is required if you sell Art merchandise, such as canvas, frames, paint, etc., wholesale or retail.

The sellers permit is also called state ID, wholesale ID, resale ID, or re-seller license.

If you are an employer, you will need a federal employer Number and a State Employer Number.

For example if you hire someone to help you with photo finishing etc.

If you do business as a name other than your full legal name, for example, you do business as "Art4 u," you will need to file a doing business as (DBA) filing.

Finally, you have the option or incorporating or forming anArtLLC.

Starting an Etsy Store Business
Hi, Rhonda, yes a FL Business License is Required To Sell Art On Etsy. Also here is Where To Start Setting Up Etsy Shop In Florida. Here is What License You Need To Sell On Etsy used and new items. The Permits to Buy Wholesale And Resale and getting a business license for Etsy Store are available here online.

When you buy wholesale, you need to provide the wholesaler the resale certificate that comes with our seller's permit filing service.

The resale certificate will have the business name, seller's permit number, and the business address to certify that you are an authorized reseller in Florida.
Sales tax is added to the price of taxable goods or services and collected from the purchaser at the time of sale.

Florida's general state sales tax rate is 6% with the following exceptions: 4% on amusement machine receipts, 5.5% on the lease or license of commercial real property, and 6.95% on electricity.

The sales tax rate for most locations in Virginia is 5.3%. Three areas have an additional regional tax as outlined below. In all of Florida , food for home consumption (e.g. grocery items) and certain essential personal hygiene items are taxed at a reduced rate of 2.5%.

The State of Washington imposes a 6.5% sales tax on all retail sales as defined by statute (RCW 82.08. 020).

The state sales tax rate in Minnesota is 6.875%.

With local taxes, the total sales tax rate is between 6.875% and 8.875%. Minnesota has recent rate changes (Fri Jan 01, 2021).

When you sell retail, you need to charge sales tax. For example, if you sell a new or used item at $70, you will need to collect an additional $5.60 for sales tax because CA has a statewide sales tax rate of 7.25%.

Setting up your trade business

First, check out the Business Tax Structure. To set up and enlist your business, it does not matter whether your company is a web, domestic, store, concession stand or a mobile cart, you'll have to begin with to select a business structure: To be specific, from the sole owner/proprietor organization, LLC or corporation.

It does not matter which trade structure you choose as  a Sellers Permit is a concern since all entities require a sellers permit which is why all businesses require, well, a trade permit. (Note that this is usually not a particular permit for your sort of trade, it may be a Commerce permit) as well.

Using a company trade name subjects you to having to record a DBA. For this event, in case your title is Joe Baiden, and you're doing commerce as Best Things By Baiden, the Baiden title must be registered with a DBA Doing Business As Certificate.

Also, note that anything  that can be touched (i.e., substantial items such as gear, adornments, stock, gadgets, arranged nourishment) requires a Sales Tax ID (Vendor  License) to either purchase or offer the items discounted from companies that offer them in bulk or offer them directly to buyers.

The seller's allow is additionally called a wholesale ID, a state ID (there are 2 state IDs and the other one is called an employer ID but you most likely need a retail seller permit license from the state). If you hire individuals to work for your commerce at any time within 30 days of beginning your trade subjects, you've got to induce a Government EIN and a State EIN.

Be that as it may, you may to want to get an EIN if  you are an independent contractor  organization or autonomous temporary worker, or an enterprise or an LLC. It is continuously a great idea to get an EIN as a sole proprietor and utilize it as a business ID in place of the social security number.

However, you'll still require other filings for trade assessment enrollments such as licenses, invented trade names, DBA, and tax IDs as depicted above. For illustration, in case you need to be an LLC, you must get an LLC certificate and an LLC working understanding as well as an EIN.

If you enlist laborers, you wish the EIN to be the LLC ID in expansion to being an Employer ID.

Finally, indeed the sole proprietor working from domestic or fair online can set up an LLC or consolidate, in which case, they will not get to enroll the exchange title with a DBA since the LLC or Corporation title will be the legitimate title of the trade.

DBA stands for Doing Business As, and it is additionally called a fictitious, expected, exchange firm or commerce certificate exchange title.

What licenses, permits and paperwork do I need to open a for-profit thrift and consignment store in Bridgeport, Connecticut, as a sole proprietor?
Answer by freesellerspermit.com:

Start with a Connecticut sales and use tax permit. A thrift and consignment shop sells taxable goods to the public, so you must collect sales tax, and consigned items count as your sales too.

• Trade name: a DBA if you operate under a shop name as a sole proprietor, though an LLC would separate the shop's debts from your own.

• EIN: useful for banking and required once you hire anyone.

• Local business license and zoning approval for the Bridgeport storefront, plus any certificate of occupancy for the space.

• Written consignment agreements with each seller, spelling out the split and the holding period.

• Employer accounts for unemployment and withholding if you add staff.

What do I need in Mississippi to buy wholesale as a sole proprietor and sell clothing online?
Answer by freesellerspermit.com:
10/14/2026 7:15 AM

In Mississippi you would register for a sales tax permit. That registration is what lets you hand wholesalers a resale certificate, so you buy inventory without paying sales tax on it, and it also obliges you to collect tax on sales to Mississippi customers.

As a sole proprietor you can run under your own name, or file a DBA if you want a brand name on your website and invoices. Many wholesalers also ask for an EIN, which keeps your Social Security number off paperwork. Check whether your town wants a local privilege or business license even for a home-based online shop. If you will sell into other states in volume, you may owe sales tax registration there too. An LLC is optional but worth considering once sales grow, and we can file every piece of this for you.

Your cosmetology license covers the services you perform, but selling products is a separate matter. In Ohio you need a vendor's license, since you will be collecting sales tax on every bottle and tool sold to a client.

That same vendor's license lets you buy product from distributors using a resale certificate, so you stop paying tax at the wholesale counter. If you work from a salon booth, ask the owner whether sales run through their register or yours, because that decides whose license is used. Add an EIN, and an LLC or DBA if you want a brand name on your invoices. Your contractor license does not figure into retail, so unless you sell in a store you lease, a local business license is the only other piece. We can file the vendor's license and EIN for you.

home businesses need both a home occupation license and a business license. Even online or home based businesses need to obtain all necessary licenses like any other business. Commercial location stores need a business license and some zoning clearances.             If there are chemicals or other materials or activities that present danger to the reasonable person requires inspections. If you are home based it is better not to store or say that you store merchandise in your home because they may not issue a business license. I buy furniture and appliances from private owners and resell them. What type of license do I need to do this from a rented space?
10/14/2026 7:15 AM

Michigan treats a regular resale operation as a business, so you need a sales tax license. Selling used furniture and appliances from a rented space is taxable retail, and the license is what lets you collect and report that tax.

• Your lease should allow retail use, and your town may require a local business license or occupancy approval.

• Buying from private owners means no resale certificate applies to those purchases, so keep a bill of sale for each item you take in.

• Electronics and appliances can raise secondhand-dealer or recall-check questions, so keep records of what you buy and from whom.

• Choose a DBA for a shop name, or an LLC to protect your personal assets from customer injuries and lease problems.

An EIN is also smart for banking.

Can I sell or barter young tropical fish that my aquarium fish had, through Craigslist? I want to know whether bartering counts as selling.
10/14/2026 7:15 AM

Bartering counts as a sale for sales tax purposes, because the fair value of what you receive is treated like money. So swapping fish for goods is not a loophole.

Whether Florida expects a sales tax certificate of registration from you depends on how often you sell. A one-off sale of a few baby fish from a home aquarium is very different from an ongoing hobby that turns into regular income. Once you sell regularly or advertise ongoing, you are in business, and a sales tax certificate of registration would be the first thing to get. Live animal sales can also carry their own rules on health, species and shipping, so be careful with anything non-native or regulated. A DBA for a fishkeeping brand, plus an EIN, would be the usual next steps, and we can handle both.
